Trying Times

Hi there everyone. I wanted to take a second to pop up and let everyone know why I have not been getting
My Son The Day Before His Cardiac Arrest
podcasts out in a while. My son, who is 24, suffered cardiac arrest. He had been feeling poorly for a time and complained of a migraine that had lasted four days. On the fifth day he woke up with severe chest and arm pain, so much pain that he could not muster the strength to wake his wife lying beside him in bed. He attempted to lay back down and the pain greatly increased. Finally he was able to wake his wife who rushed him to the emergency room.

After a few days in the hospital the cause of his cardiac arrest was determined to be acute Pericarditis. The heart doctors told my son had he just taken a pain pill and gone back to sleep he would never have woken again. Pericarditis is an inflammation of the Pericardial sack that surrounds the heart. The sack had swelled and increased the pressure on his heart essentially strangling it until it could no longer beat.

Pericarditis has many different causes. Most commonly there is a virus of some kind the body is attempting to fight off and it settles in the heart or there is a bacterial infection in the body that causes the sack to inflame. Regardless, having this occur at 24 is highly unusual and we were all shocked.

My son was given a PIC line so that medications could be delivered directly to his heart and he is on several medications to control his blood pressure and reduce the swelling. Healing has been very slow but he said he is feeling better and noticing a difference.

In addition to my son's illness, Bronwynn Forest Torgerson, Writer, Author, Mother, Wife, Friend, and fellow Pagan (http://www.llewellyn.com/author.php?author_id=3948) passed away of a brain hemorrhage.  Bronwynn had been fighting liver cancer. Her husband Dan is coping as well as can be expected and the community has rallied around him. There was a lovely service in her honor on Beltane where all of her friends and family were able to share stories (http://www.witchvox.com/va/dt_va.html?a=usaz&c=passages&id=15401). Bronwynn is the author of One Witch's Way (http://www.llewellyn.com/product.php?ean=9780738713694) and countless magazine articles. Her passing will leave a large hole in the Phoenix Pagan community. Bronwynn was responsible for bringing us Pagan Pride Day 10 years ago. I hope her journey to the Summerland was swift. Hail Bronwynn!

I also had the joy of my car breaking down. $1200 to fix and it took a month! The really awful part is that I borrowed a car off my folks while mine was in the shop and it broke down! The bearings went and my father had to replace the engine. I felt just horrible. However, both of our cars are now back up and running. I love my car and fixing it was necessary, but $1200 left quite a dent in my wallet. However, my car is now as zippy as ever and even better than before.

I was able to celebrate Ostara with my granddaughter who has just turned 2. She adored the egg hunt and festivities tied to celebrating the turning of the wheel to spring.
Happy 2nd Birthday, Lily!
I even got to take birthday pictures of her as well. She is growing up so quickly. Just last week she started using the potty instead of diapers.

The end of the school year is rapidly approaching and I have only 16 more teaching days left until Summer. It is my intention to get back on recording Podcasts as quickly as possible.  I didn't want everyone to think I podfaded. Life just seems to have thrown me some loops, but I promise to get back on track as quickly as I can.

Pagan Homeschool Network Episode 5

Cluck Cluck Science: Raising Chickens with your student to teach a wide range of skills such as science, math, research, journal keeping, etc. I also touch briefly on getting your kids involved in PenPals. Here are some of the links I referred to in this podcast:

http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/index.html  The McMurray Hatchery website. They sell chicks and supplies.

http://www.enasco.com/ Nasco Supply Co. A great rescource for educational, Farm/Ag materials, as well as science supplies.

For books and the inexpensive Chicken Tractor I spoke about go to my Amazon Book Store page and look for Episode 5. There you will find some good books and a couple of options for keeping chickens. There are also some great incubator ideas. Don't forget to try Ebay and Craigslist in your area as well! http://astore.amazon.com/educ8rkids-20

http://www.studentsoftheworld.info/menu_penpals.php A good place to begin the search for a PenPal for your student.

Another great place to check out: http://www.friendship-by-mail.com/pen-pals-for-kids.html
